Villancicos en Jackson Square

Una de las tradiciones más brillantes de la temporada navideña en Nueva Orleans convierte al centro histórico en el escenario para un enorme coro de personas que se reúne a entonar canciones de la temporada a la luz de miles de velas.

Funciona así: El público se presenta en la noche acordada, generalmente unos diez días antes de la Navidad, a la plaza Jackson Square, y espera a que las puertas se abran. Ahí, le proveen a cada persona, sin costo alguno, de una vela y un libro con las letras de los villancicos que se van a cantar, y luego de una breve ceremonia en un estrado frente a la catedral, la música comienza.

Las canciones son tradicionales y sin denominación específica. Eso sí, hay que llegar con tiempo a hacer fila para entrar, ya que comienzan puntualmente, y todo termina en el lapso de una hora. “Imagínese usted un mar de gente, y que todo lo que alcanza a ver son todas esas velas encendidas”, dice Sandra Dartus, quien es miembro del grupo que organiza el evento. “Es una sensación maravillosa, un mar de humanidad con todas esas velas y todos cantando y sonriendo juntos”, comenta.

Patio Planters of The Vieux Carré es el nombre oficial del grupo que reúne a 350 voluntarios que se organizan durante todo el año para recaudar los fondos que sirven para costear las velas, los libros, y todos los gastos de seguridad y logística que permiten que de ocho a diez mil personas puedan reunirse de forma pacífica cada año, sin falta, desde 1946.

En una de esas ocasiones, ante la amenaza de mal tiempo, el Arzobispo de esa ocasión ofreció que el canto se hiciera dentro de la catedral, para resguardar a la muchedumbre, y así ha ocurrido unas cuantas ocasiones.

Este año, Caroling in Jackson Square se realizará el domingo 16 de diciembre a las 7p.m.

Happy 2023!

It’s hard to believe this issue wraps the year 2022 and opens up a very promising 2023, despite all the talks about inflation and the inevitable recession. We shall see, but for now, New Orleans is gearing up for a busy year full of sporting and cultural events and the eyes of the world tuning in to the city of Jazz for the Miss Universe pageant taking place January 14th.

We talk about Miss Universe with Miss Louisiana RIM 2018, who stood in front of the first LEED-certified convention center in the world. Congratulations to the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on its outstanding efforts to become sustainable and attract environmentally conscious travelers. Walt Leger, the incoming president of New Orleans & Company, talks about the NOENMCC milestones and their partnership to keep New Orleans a top destination for national and international visitors.
