COVINGTON, La. — A town of fewer than 12,000 people has already cast nearly 198,000 votes. Now Covington High School needs the rest of Louisiana.

Covington High has been named the South Division Champion in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights competition, beating out nearly 2,500 schools nationwide to become one of only four finalists for a $1 million football-field upgrade. The Lions have already secured $280,000 in prizes this year — $250,000 as Division Champions, $25,000 as Top 40 finalists, and a $5,000 “5K Fridays” award — plus a Gronk Fitness gym upgrade and a $5,000 student leadership award. The program supports more than 450 student-athletes at one of St. Tammany Parish’s largest athletic schools.

The final is simple: the school with the most public votes by November 8 wins the $1 million grand prize, announced November 12. Covington faces Buffalo Gap (Virginia), Menasha (Wisconsin), and Lakeside (Washington). Anyone can vote — once per day, every day through Nov. 8 — at FridayNight5GLights.com with a valid mobile number.

You don’t have to live in Covington to vote. A win for the Lions is a win for Louisiana kids — and for every family, Latino families included, whose children play, cheer, and march under those Friday night lights.
