Meet Dr. Rafael Cortés-Morán: Primary Care & Geriatric Expert
What inspired you to study medicine? Having the opportunity to help the entire community within the field of medicine, sowing the seeds of prevention and holistic healing. The commitment to Hispanics to fight against inequalities and discrimination in the health system. Also, the opportunity to treat elderly patients with the dignity they deserve, as they are an integral part of our society.
Dr. Cortés-Morán’s Passion for Patient Care
What are you most passionate about in your profession? The opportunity to help geriatric patients and their families by offering quality health services at Ochsner Health System.
Why did you choose family medicine and geriatrics as your specialization? To treat patients in all stages of their lives, specializing in family medicine and geriatrics. This broad scope allows me to address diverse health needs.
Is there any condition that predominates in the patients you see? Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and cardiovascular problems associated with these chronic diseases.
What do you recommend to people as a preventative method for that condition or health in general? Having a good, trusted primary care doctor and getting an annual physical exam, regardless of your age. Your doctor will be your guide in diagnostic tests, lifestyle changes, and treatment, if necessary. The American Academy of Family Physicians offers valuable resources on preventative care.
Addressing Health Needs in the Hispanic Community
What advice do you give to young immigrants or minority groups in the US who dream of studying health careers? Now more than ever, we must embrace our culture and language because the future of the United States needs Spanish-speaking health professionals. The Hispanic population continues to grow, and it is estimated that by 2060 we will be 26% of the U.S. population. The minority with the greatest cultural, political, and economic impact. For more information on geriatric health, consult the National Institute on Aging.
What do you enjoy outside of work? I participate in many activities with my young daughter who was born here (tennis, music, and dance) and I tutor math. I have two older children: my daughter works in California and my son in Puerto Rico. I am very proud of them! I also enjoy reading, playing the ukulele, and I practice martial arts and swimming.
What do you like about living in Louisiana? The cultural diversity, the food, and the sense of community. It’s a truly unique place to live and serve.
