Toodie and Roodie, the Foodies: A children’s book about the diverse history of New Orleans food

In an issue dedicated to Designing the Future, we shine a spotlight on Dr. Nicole Caridad Ralston—the powerhouse Latina food blogger (@eatenpathnola), DEI expert, and now, captivating children’s author. For Dr. Ralston, every endeavor, from her consulting firm (Caridad Consulting) to her writing, is fueled by a single, powerful mission: “Our identities matter, where we come from matters, and we should explore those things.”

Dr. Ralston, who holds a Ph.D. and leads professionals in organizational strengthening, proves that deep intellectual rigor and creative passion are inseparable. Her latest spark of genius came during maternity leave in early 2023, where she transformed her deep knowledge of NOLA’s food history into her first children’s book.

Toodie and Roodie: The Full Flavor of NOLA

Forget the history books! Dr. Ralston set out to craft a vibrant, accessible narrative that goes beyond the usual French and Spanish culinary tales. Her book, Toodie and Roodie, the Foodies, introduces us to multiracial, Afro-Latino twins who embark on a colorful journey sparked by the simple magic of gumbo.

The narrative intentionally uplifts the histories often overlooked, like the foundational role of the Filipino community in the shrimping industry, alongside the rich Afro-Cuban and Creole influences represented by the main characters. The book is a feast for the eyes, bursting with New Orleans vibrancy, from colorful houses to Mardi Gras scenes. It’s perfect for readers from the second to fifth grade, featuring a food glossary and special journaling prompts in the hardcover to inspire families to start documenting their own food heritage and recipes.

The Perfect Christmas Gift that Gives Back

As we look toward 2026, Toodie and Roodie, the Foodies is the ultimate gift of culture, curiosity, and community love.

Not only does it connect children to the unique, dazzling history of their city, but all proceeds from book sales through the end of 2025 are being donated to Second Harvest Food Bank to support community fridges. Your purchase is a direct investment in cultural awareness and essential hunger relief, making it a truly impactful gift this holiday season.
