Meet Andrés Alarcón MD, MPH: Pediatric Infectious Diseases

What inspired you to study medicine? In my childhood, I suffered from asthma and had a lot of contact with pediatricians, which motivated me to explore the field of medicine.

What are you most passionate about in your profession?  When children get better and I see the joy of their families at Ochsner Health System.

Why did you choose pediatrics and infectious diseases as your specialization? I chose it because it is a specialty that constantly teaches us to be humble in the face of illness.

Is there any condition that predominates in the patients you see? Infections preventable with immunizations/vaccines.

What do you recommend to people as a preventative method for that condition or health in general? Have your immunizations up to date.

What advice do you give to young immigrants or minority groups in the US who dream of studying health careers? Follow your dreams, everything is possible with support and will.

What do you enjoy outside of work? Going swimming or to the park with my family. We have a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old daughter. 

What do you like about living in Louisiana? The unity of the community and the support among colleagues/friends.
